The band will be working on the follow-up to 'Lost Souls' during the rest of 2001...
DOVES headlined the last of the NME CARLING AWARD shows at the LONDON ASTORIA last night (February 5) – their last planned gig in the UK this year, according to lead singer JIMI GOODWIN.
Talking to NME.COM as he headed offstage at the end of a night which had seen storming sets from Elbow, Ed Harcourt and Cooper Temple Clause, he said that the band were now in the studio working on the follow-up to last year’s acclaimed debut album, ‘Lost Souls’.
It’s due out later this year or early next.
“It’s the last time we’re doing that sort of ‘Lost Souls’-era set in England for the rest of the year. We’re in the studio getting the next one done. We’ve got tunes, but it takes a while ’til everyone’s fuckin’ 100 per cent about them.”
Symbolically, Jimi said it was part of the reason they decided to play ‘Space Face’ as their final song – a club favourite more than a decade ago released by Doves’ previous incarnation, Sub Sub.
It was only the second time that the band had ever played the track live – the last time was at a New Year’s Eve party in Manchester.
“It was the first thing we ever did, we wrote it to get played at the Hacienda. That was our dream. We played it tonight cos we were just being indulgent,” he smiled.
However, Jimi said he didn’t think that he deserved the ecstatic reception proffered by the sell-out crowd – and thought his band had played a “shit gig”. “It started out fine, fine and funky, then it just went tits up!” he explained. “It’s when we don’t rehearse, when we just do one day’s rehearsal and then say, ‘It’s sweet.’ We had our moments, it was OK.”
However, the band do have their biggest US tour to date lined up, calling at:
Philadelphia Upstage (February 24)
Washington 9:30 Club (25)
Boston Paradise Rock Club (26)
New York Bowery Ballroom (27)
Detroit St. Andrews Hall (March 2)
Chicago Double Door (3)
Minneapolis 7th Street Entry (4)
