HIP-HOPPING MAD!

A hip-hop awards ceremony in the US where Dr Dre was due to pick up a lifetime achievement award was shut down by police last night (August 22) after mass brawls broke out in the audience.

According to reports from the US this morning (August 23), the fighting began almost as soon as guests starting arriving at the ceremony – the Source Magazine Awards at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium. Allstar website ([url=]www.cdnow.com) reports eyewitnesses claiming Havoc of Mobb Deep and Krayzie Bone of Bone-Thugs-N-Harmony were badly beaten in the melee, which spread to the stage from the audience. Members of the Death Row ‘family’ are also reported to have have fought onstage.

A statement was issued by Pasadena Police Department following the incident which read: “At approximately 8pm, a large fight broke out in the audience. As a result of the fight, scores of people poured out of their seats, some towards the exits of the auditorium, while up to 75 others took to the stage. As uniformed police personnel attempted to quell several fights occurring simultaneously, unknown members of the audience began throwing objects such as bottles and CD covers onto the stage.

“For the safety of the audience, and with no apparent hope of continuing the show peacefully, the Pasadena Police Department announced the show would not continue and asked the audience to leave quietly.”

It went on: “The majority of the audience was very cooperative and left the auditorium without incident. After approximately two hours, the area around the auditorium had been cleared. It was unknown at this point what may have started the initial fight. There were no arrests and no injuries were reported.”

It is unclear whether the awards, which were being filmed for broadcast US television, will now be rescheduled.
