Dr. Dre turns movie producer

He plans to develop dark comedies

Music producer Dr Dre has signed a deal with New Line Cinema and is set to begin producing films.

The Snoop Dogg collaborator plans to initially work on dark comedies, with an eventual move to horror films.

According to Variety, Dre feels the move is a natural development, given that he has directed music videos in the past and is planning on forging a career as a director.

Dre’s longtime collaborator, New Line’s Toby Emmerich, described the reasons behind approaching him for the deal, saying: “Everything Dre has worked on becomes a hit, and one of the reasons for that is that he never put his name on anything that he doesn’t really believe in.

“His records have always been very narrative in nature, and you can tell from his songs that he understands how to tell a story.”

Dre, a former member of NWA, is one of the rap world’s most successful and sought after producers, having worked with Snoop Dogg, 50 Cent and Mary J Blige. Albums produced by Dre have sold more than 80 million worldwide.
