Drake claims ‘Views’ has sold 630,000 copies on its first day

The rapper talked big sales numbers at his Toronto album launch

Drake has used his hometown album launch event to claim that his newly-released album ‘Views’ (rebranded from ‘Views From The 6’ at last notice) has sold more than 600,000 copies in its first day of release.

The Toronto rapper performed at a Toronto Raptors basketball game last night (April 29), before heading on to his launch party in the city.

Footage from the launch party shows the rapper announcing “I got a text message that says we sold like 630,000 something records in one night, that’s the first time we’ve ever done that so thank you so much.”

‘Views’ is not available as a physical album yet, but can be heard via iTunes and Apple Music. The album features Rihanna, but has had contributions by Kanye West and Jay-Z cut from the final version.

The fastest selling album in the US since first-week sales records began in 1991 is Adele‘s latest ’25’, which sold 3,378,000 copies in its first week of sales last year in the US alone. ’25’ also sold more than 800,000 copies in the UK, where it is also the fastest-selling release ahead of Oasis‘ ‘Be Here Now’.

Explaining his decision to cut Kanye West and Jay-Z from the record – they had been featured on the track ‘Pop Style’ – Drake said:

“I just ended up going with my version of the song.” The Canadian rapper replaced West and Jay Z’s verse with his own in the final version of the track.

Asked about Jay Z’s initial feature, which included just two lines, Drake told Zane Lowe: “Jay didn’t really do a verse. I was just trying to get [Kanye] on it first. Jay kinda just did my first few lines for me and that’s how we flexed it”.

“It didn’t play out how I wanted it to go,” he added. “Sometimes [Jay Z and I] just fall on opposite sides of the spectrum. It’s always mutual respect but sometimes it has to be from afar.”

Drake went on to praise West, describing him as “one of my favourite people… in the world”. He added: “I love [Kanye]. He’s a really good guy. I grew up with him as a role model. Always given him credit that’s why we’re here right now. It’s amazing to be his friend.”
