The rapper showcased some of the artists from his OVO label at the festival
Drake made a surprise appearance at SXSW last night (March 20), closing out the Fader Fort stage on the last day of the festival.
Rumours flew around Twitter about the Toronto rapper making an appearance, with many suggesting Rihanna would also show up for the gig.
Following rap act Yo Gotti’s headline set, two DJs appeared behind raised decks telling the crowd “We’re from Toronto, Canada” to huge screams. Artists from the OVO label including dvsn, Roy Wood$, Majid Jordan and PARTYNEXTDOOR then came out one by one to play a few songs each to the audience.
Eventually, Drake appeared on stage, opening his short set with ‘Energy’. He told the crowd, many of whom had been waiting for most of the day, “Austin, Texas, how you feeling? Make some noise. OVO Sound did their thing. The Fader asked me to do one song, but if you want we can keep it going. I’ve got nothing else to do.”
He then played ‘Know Yourself’, ‘Big Rings’ and ‘Jumpman’. The latter was performed twice, with Metro Boomin coming out on stage for the second run through.
Drake closed his set on ‘Back To Back’ and ‘Summer Sixteen’, between which he offered an update on his next album ‘Views From The Six’. “[It’s] coming next month,” he told the crowd before leaving the stage to a mix of cheers and boos, with some fans unhappy at a lack of ‘Hotline Bling’ in the setlist.
