Dua Lipa discusses inspiration from ‘terrible’ and ‘manipulative’ ex-boyfriends

She also reveals the origin of 'Hotter Than Hell'

Dua Lipa has spoken out about how she turns to memories of ‘terrible’ and ‘manipulative’ ex-boyfriends when it comes to musical inspiration.

After her stellar Live Lounge performance last week before dominating the BRIT Awards, the ‘New Rules’ singer has spoken to Rolling Stone about using former boyfriends as a muse.

‘[Some were] emotionally manipulative,” said Lipa. “And then I dated this guy who literally would never eat a single vegetable. I was like, “This is terrible. You eat like a five-year-old. I’m f**king out.”‘

Speaking of the inspiration behind her hit single ‘Hotter Than Hell’, Lipa said: “I was going through a tough breakup,’ she said. ‘Someone who made me feel like I wasn’t good enough. But when I wrote this song, I wanted it to seem like he couldn’t get enough of me.

“The song was good, but the chorus wasn’t quite there. We were like, ‘Let’s scrap it’.

“And I was scrolling through Tumblr, and I see the words “Hotter than Hell” in red on a black background. And I go, “That’s cool! What if he thought I was hotter than hell, and I just didn’t want him?”‘

This comes as she also reveals how she received death threats from Taylor Swift fans. After she said that she preferred to Kanye West to Swift in an interview, she was soon receiving messages from ‘Swifties’ wishing her dead.

“They were sending me snake emojis for, like, three days straight,” said Lipa. “They’re like, ‘I hope you die.’ I’m like, ‘Yo! I literally didn’t say anything’”
