Stars pay tribute to Earth Wind & Fire’s Maurice White following death

Nile Rodgers, Mark Ronson, Solange and more pay respects

Tributes have poured in to late Earth Wind & Fire founding member Maurice White, who passed away earlier this week (February 3).

News of White’s death was announced yesterday (February 4). White, 74, was found to have died peacefully, according to a post on the band’s Twitter feed,.

White suffered from Parkinson’s Disease in the early ’90s, causing him to stop touring with the band around 1994. Earth, Wind & Fire were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000.

The band were one of the most prominent acts of the ’70s and ’80s, their sounds spanning multiple genres, including R&B, soul, funk, jazz, disco, pop, rock, Latin and more. They are hailed as one of the most successful bands of the 20th Century.

The band are to be honoured with a ‘lifetime achievement award’ at the Grammy Awards on February 15.


Following White’s passing, a number of stars have taken to Twitter to pay their respects. Scroll below for a full list of tributes.

Nile Rodgers referred to White as “one of the most amazing innovators of all time”, while Solange labelled the late star as a “hero”.

White’s band wrote: “Our brother Maurice White passed peacefully in his sleep this morning. The light is he, shining on you and me.”
