Ricky Gervais invites Ed Sheeran to cover David Brent song

Sheeran says they should 'do it for Red Nose Day or Comic Relief'

Ed Sheeran may team up with Ricky Gervais for a new charity single.

The comedian has reached out to Sheeran via Twitter, writing, “I think @edsheeran should do an Ed Sheeranesque acoustic version of Free Love Freeway. Worldwide number 1 guaranteed”. Gervais was referring to a song by David Brent, his character from The Office.

Sheeran later responded to the invitation by suggesting that the pair “do it for Red Nose Day or Comic Relief”.

David Brent is set to make his big screen debut soon, after Ricky Gervais secured financing for his The Office spin-off film.

Titled Life On The Road, the documentary-style film will follow Gervais’ former paper merchants boss as he tries to drum up funds to take his band Foregone Conclusion on tour. Gervais, the spin-off’s writer-director-star, revealed last year that he has written “all new tracks” for the film.

Meanwhile, Ed Sheeran is reportedly planning to volunteer in a charity shop during time away from music.

Earlier this year, Sheeran revealed he was hoping to “get on the outside [of the showbiz bubble] for at least a year”.

The manager of the Sue Ryder shop in Framlingham, Suffolk, recently told the press, “There’s a good possibility he will volunteer here. We’d welcome him. My volunteers, who are aged between 61 and 91, know Ed because he was brought up in the town. They would be fine working with him.”

She also highlighted that the 24-year-old had recently bought an old police station for £1 million, a site he has turned into a youth club. “He’ll also be helping there when it’s up and running. I think he will draw the youngsters into our shop which will be good for us.”
