Ed Sheeran has become the first British artist and just second overall to achieve two billion Spotify streams.
The singer and guitarist follows Eminem in reaching the milestone, beating out Calvin Harris who, last September, became the first British solo artist to pass the one billion stream mark.
In a statement, Kevin Brown, Spotify’s Head of Label Relations for Europe, said: “Breaking the two billion streams barrier on Spotify is evidence – were it needed – of Ed Sheeran’s enormous popularity among the 60 million music fans on the service.
“Ed Sheeran is quite simply one of the best-loved artists on Spotify globally, and we are thrilled that he has achieved this milestone.”
The news follows last week’s revelation that Sheeran’s ‘Thinking Out Loud’ topped a Spotify list of the ‘most-streamed sleep songs’, which charted the tracks users most commonly add to sleep-themed playlists or in searches for music to use as sleep aides.
Furthermore, Sheeran had another six songs on the Top 20 list.
