'Hello' star thought singer was making 'some sort of fucking joke'
Ed Sheeran has revealed that he managed to accidentally offend Adele when they had dinner together recently, with the latter star wrongly thinking that Sheeran was poking fun at the infamous flip-phone that featured in her ‘Hello’ music video.
Adele released the video for her single ‘Hello’, from massive-selling third album ’25’, in October. In the clip the singer is seen using an old fashioned flip-phone, which confused many fans and led to a lot of memes.
Seemingly unaware of this, Sheeran said that he brought up the subject of a new flip-phone he had just bought in conversation with Adele over dinner.
Sheeran explained: “I’m getting rid of my phone and all my numbers. I bought a Motorola flip phone. She wasn’t happy about that”.
“We went out for dinner and I hadn’t seen the ‘Hello’ video. I said, ‘I’m getting a flip phone’ and she said, ‘Is that some sort of fucking joke?’,” he recalled to The Sun.
“I was like sat there being like, ‘Is it?’ Someone piped up and was like, ‘He hasn’t seen the video’.”

The video’s director Xavier Dolan recently explained the inclusion of a flip-phone in the clip and described his annoyance at people discussing it on social media. He told the LA Times: “It drives me crazy. I could see the GIFs on Twitter. I’m like, ‘Guys, get over it. It doesn’t matter.’ But the real explanation is that I never like filming modern phones or cars. They’re so implanted in our lives that when you see them in movies you’re reminded you’re in reality.”
Dolan added: “If you see an iPhone or a Toyota in a movie, they’re anti-narrative, they take you out of the story. If I put an iPhone or a modern car in a movie it feels like I’m making a commercial.”
Ed Sheeran, meanwhile, recently stated that he is taking a break from social media to focus on recording his third album and to “travel the world and see everything I missed”.
The singer-songwriter, who has 16 million Twitter followers and 5.5 million Instagram followers, broke the news via Instagram, saying that he was “taking a break from my phone, emails and all social media for a while” because he was “seeing the world through a screen and not my eyes”.
Sheeran wrote: “I’m taking this opportunity of me not having to be anywhere or do anything to travel the world and see everything I missed.”
He also said that his upcoming third album is imminent. “The third album is on its way and is the best thing I have made thus far. See you all next autumn, and thank you for being amazing,” Sheeran wrote.
