Quirky Yank analogue freaks joined by Damon, Tim Wheeler and Donna Mathews on new album...

DAMON ALBARN, Ash‘s Tim Wheeler, Elastica‘s Donna Matthews and former Lush singer Miki Berenyi all make guest vocal appearances on little-known US band The Rentals‘ upcoming album, ‘Seven More Minutes’.

The Los Angeles band were formed by former Weezer bassist Matt Sharp and are hugely popular in the States but little heard of over here. The new LP is released in the UK on Maverick on April 26 and is the follow-up to their 1995 debut, ‘Return Of The Rentals’.

Sharp, who shares vocals with guests on each of the LP’s 15 songs, told NME that the collaborations came about by accident, during The Rentals‘ two stints of living and recording in London in 1997.

He said: “All the different people on the record are from the road at some point, just acquaintances, either from me opening for them at some point, or from the Weezer thing. I didn’t pre-plan any of that stuff.”

Wheeler sings on the album’s first single, ‘Hello, Hello’, and also contributed acoustic guitar parts to ‘Overlee’. Matthews adds vocals to ‘Say Goodbye Forever’ and sings over Sharp on ‘Must Be Wrong’. Berenyi sings on ‘The Cruise’ and Albarn joins Sharp for an ‘MC shootout’ on the rap-friendly ‘Big Daddy C’, a laid-back rave-up.

The Rentals are due to tour Europe around the release of the album, details to be announced shortly.
