Guy Garvey shares details of Elbow’s ‘chunky’ and ‘beat-heavy’ new album

They're hitting the road next year

Elbow frontman Guy Garvey has unveiled details of their upcoming new album, revealing that it sounds ‘chunky and beat-heavy’.

Last week saw the Mercury-winners’ seventh studio record and the follow-up to 2014’s ‘The Take Off And Landing Of Everything‘ will be released on 3 February, before they head out on their “most extensive tour since 2008”.

Little is known about the record, but now Garvey has shared some details in a new interview with Jo Whiley.

“There’s one called ‘Moleno’, which I believe is Spanish or Portuguese for ‘mill’, one’s called ‘Nate’ – don’t ask me why. One’s called ‘Strut’ and it’s pretty obvious when you it why. And there’s one called ‘Charm’ which is the name of a cleaning product that was sat on the desk,” said Garvey.

“It’s really quite chunky and beat-heavy. There’s a sparseness to the songs which perhaps we’re not known for. The themes are ranging as always, great big themes and concerns for the world at the same time as falling in love, looking forwards and backwards and all of the things.”

He added: “It’s been really fun. It’s been quite fast actually. We only started it in January.”

This will be their first release as a four-piece, following the departure of drummer Richard Jupp earlier this year.
