Elbow tip Friendly Fires to win Barclaycard Mercury Prize

Last year's winners pick their favourite track from this year's nominees

Elbow have tipped Friendly Fires to win the Barclaycard Mercury Prize 2009, which is announced tomorrow evening (September 8).

The Bury band, who won last year’s prize for their album ‘The Seldom Seen Kid’, were speaking to BBC 6music when they gave their prediction.

“We wish luck to everybody who is on the list this year, but more than that, congratulations on being on the list. Everybody there make sure you have a great night,” the band said, before choosing a track from their favourite band of this year’s nominees to play.

“The tune that we have chosen from the 2009 shortlist – it was very difficult as well because there’s so many great people on there but we thought we’d just chose one, kind of our little tip in a way – we’ve chosen Friendly Fires, and the song is called ‘Jump In The Pool’.”
