Singer kicks off this year's Apple Music Festival with a hit-packed 90-minute set
Ellie Goulding gave new single ‘On My Mind’ its live debut last night as she opened this year’s Apple Music Festival.
The singer kicked off the 10-night run of live shows at Camden’s Roundhouse with an energetic set during which she told the crowd: “It’s good to be back in London – I only live down the road.”
She began a hit-packed 90 minutes with a rousing rendition of recent Calvin Harris collaboration ‘Outside’ before dropping ’80s-influenced ‘Goodness Gracious’ and the anthemic ‘Starry Eyed’ into her set early on.
Around the halfway mark, Goulding told the crowd that she “really wanted to play a song I haven’t played in a while because I’m back in London”. Her band then left the stage and with only a piano backing her, Goulding delivered a heartfelt rendition of ‘Your Song’, the Elton John classic that she covered for John Lewis’s 2010 Christmas TV advert.
With her band back on stage, Goulding launched into a stirring version of ‘Joy’, a highlight from her 2012 album ‘Halcyon’, before raising the tempo with a lusty rendition of her Major Lazer collaboration ‘Powerful’ and a rock-tinged take on ‘Figure 8’, another standout from the ‘Halcyon’ album.
She then ended her main set with a crowd-pleasing run of hits including ‘Anything Could Happen’, her other big Calvin Harris collaboration ‘I Need Your Love’, her most successful US single ‘Lights’ and her 2013 UK chart-topper ‘Burn’.
Following a brief encore Goulding and her band returned to the stage and the singer announced that she would be performing new single ‘On My Mind’, which had debuted online just two days earlier. Goulding was clearly pleased that her hardcore fans greeted the jittery R&B track with a cheer of recognition and after tearing into its suggestive and potentially vengeful lyrics, she told the crowd: “After that, shall we end on a love song?”
She then performed ‘Love Me Like You Do’, her chart-topping power ballad from the Fifty Shades Of Grey soundtrack, which ended the evening with a mass sing-along.
Ellie Goulding played:
‘Anything Could Happen’
‘I Need Your Love’
‘You My Everything’
‘On My Mind’
‘Love Me Like You Do’
Apple Music Festival continues at London’s Roundhouse tonight with a headline performance from Take That. Other acts due to perform between now and September 28 include Florence + The Machine, Mumford & Sons, Disclosure, One Direction and The Weeknd.
