Singer also reveals that Lorde has asked to perform with him
The singer-songwriter, who recently headlined Bestival on the Isle of Wight, shared his musical tastes in The Guardian, as well as discussing the recent bout of illness that caused him to cancel a number of live performances over the summer. Speaking about the albums he currently rates, John cites the arrangements on These New Puritans’ ‘Field Of Reeds’ and says that “punishing is good” in relation to Factor Floor’s mix of noise and techno.
Speaking about the illness he has suffered this year , when he was forced to call in doctors after falling ill on his European tour and was subsequently diagnosed with appendicitis, John claims he could have died. “I did nine shows, 24 flights and played the White Tie and Tiara Ball [the annual fundraiser for his Elton John Aids Foundation] with Coldplay with a burst appendix. I was so lucky, because usually if it bursts, it causes peritonitis. If that happens, you have to be in hospital within an hour, otherwise you’re brown bread. I’m lucky to be alive.”
He adds: “They did the operation and it was not a walk in the park. They said: ‘Oh, you’ll be out the next day.’ But it turned out to be a lot more complicated than that. I was in a lot of pain, and I was hallucinating from the morphine and the anaesthetic. I didn’t sleep for four days, it was like being on speed. I was hallucinating like mad, which was, you know, amusing for the people around me.”
