Skrillex, Lana Del Rey and Mac DeMarco also play second day of Texan festival
Eminem was joined by fellow Detroit rapper Royce Da 5’9″ during his Austin City Limits headline set last night (October 4).
The pair performed ‘Fast Lane’ from their collaborative ‘Bad Meets Evil’ release in 2011. It was part of a career-spanning set that also saw Eminem play hits including ‘Stan’, ‘Sing For The Moment’ and ‘Love The Way You Lie’.
Before the performance started a lengthy video which cast Eminem as a missing person in the style of a US crime show played on the screens at the sides of the stage.
Speaking about his return to the Texan capital during his 45-minute set, Eminem announced: “It hasn’t even been that long, it’s been three years,” he said, pausing for the cheers and screams. “But it feels like fucking 20!”
He closed his main set with ‘Not Afraid’, which he dedicated to “anybody in this crowd tonight that’s ever lost somebody to addiction.” He then returned for a one-song encore, ‘Lose Yourself’, before a fireworks display.
Skillex headlined the festival’s second biggest stage at the same time as Eminem performed. Earlier in the day, Lana Del Rey had performed in front of a substantial crowd. She smoked frequently and didn’t speak to the audience other than to acknowledge them at the end of the set with the words: “You guys are amazing – it’s so fun to be here.”
Mac DeMarco also played a well-received set at the festival earlier in the day, playing tracks from new album ‘Salad Days’ . His set also featured an extended college rock-style jam during which he invited an audience member up to sing the word ‘jamming’.
Austin City Limits continues today (October 5) with performances by bands including The Gaslight Anthem, The Replacements and Pearl Jam.
