Everything Everything discuss ‘whiny and miserable’ second album

Manchester band head straight back into the studio to work on immediate follow-up

Everything Everything frontman Jonathan Higgs has revealed that the band are back in the studio working on a new album after their second album ‘Arc’.

The Manchester band appear inside this week’s NME, which is on newsstands or available digitally now. They feature as part of a rundown of 100 albums to look forward to in 2014 containing exclusive studio reports and photos.

Speaking to NME about his band’s second album, Higgs said the record was “slow and quite morbid” saying he feels “every possible element” was over thought. Hence the quick return to the studio to record a new record. He added: “We want to be more instinctive, do it straight from the top of our domes.”

Touring Europe with Foals inspired some of the band’s new material with Yannis Philippakis of the Oxford band playing Higgs a collection of old prison recordings.

Higgs said of the singer’s input: “Slave songs accompanied by pickaxes hitting the ground at the same time. The penny dropped: I thought, ‘what more do I need?’ Nearly all the new songs are just drums and vocals.”

Everything Everything released their second album ‘Arc’ in January 2013. The new album is being recorded at the Giant Wafer studios in north Wales and does not yet have a release date.
