Maxi Jazz will be competing at Silverstone in June...
Faithless frontman MAXI JAZZ is joining a growing list of pop stars turning their attention to the motor racing world with the formation of his own team.
The star, who qualified to race semi-professionally in April, will compete at the Silverstone circuit on June 11 in round six of the Ford Fiesta Zetec Championship for Maxi Jazz Racing – a team he has formed with Brands Hatch driving instructor Ray Claydon and Ford Motorsport. The Fiesta division is often viewed as a nursery ground for those hoping to move up to professional touring car racing and Maxi is setting his sights equally as high.
“It’s something that I want to keep going,” he said, “I want to provide an outlet for talented youngsters who wouldn’t usually have the opportunity to develop their racing ability. In three years we aim to have a full team of drivers in all categories.”
Jazz joins The Prodigy’s Keith Flint and Boyzone’s Shane Lynch as high-profile names who have recently dallied in motor sport.
Flint has been racing high-grade Ducatti motor-cycles for a number of years, and despite a number of accidents is said to be keen to race more than semi-professionally. Lynch, a former motor mechanic, prefers four wheels but has also had his share of prangs while rally driving.
And ex-Beatle George Harrison is also known to be a fan of Formula One motor racing. He is a frequent guest of team owners in the pit lanes at Grand Prix around the world.
