The NME Carling Award winner joins Beck and Timbaland by contributing a tune to 'Moulin Rouge'...
FATBOY SLIM (NORMAN COOK) has written a track for the soundtrack of forthcoming BAZ LUHRMANN directed ‘MOULIN ROUGE’, NME.COM can exclusively reveal.
The superstar DJ joins Beck and R&B wunderkind Timbaland, who have already contributed a cover of David Bowie’s ‘Diamond Dogs’ to the feature.
“I’m doing a dance sequence for people doing the can-can to techno music,” he said. “I’m thoroughly enjoying working with a quality director.
“A lot of my music has been used in not very good films. Normally, something like ‘Charlie’s Angels’ phone you up [for a track] and you say, ‘You’re allowed to use it but I don’t want to get involved’. But this time, he came over to England, he stayed at my house. We talked about the film, discussed what we wanted to do.”
Cook added that he hoped to branch more and more into writing soundtrack material.
He added: “I think that’s my next ambition. I love films. To do the music for a classic good film as opposed to an American teen thing where they just put it on.”
‘Moulin Rouge’ stars Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor, and is set in the late-19th century, telling the tale of the famous club, but using contemporary music.
Speaking at the NME Carling Awards in London last night (February 6) Cook added that the recent birth of his son Woody, coupled with slow sales of new album ‘Halfway Between The Gutter And The Stars’, had made him question whether or not he wanted to carry on making music.
He admitted: “I’m still trying to work out whether or not… I don’t want to give all this up for him, but I really don’t want to give up him for this, I’m sure there’s a happy medium. There are tons of people, DJs and popstars, who are also good dads while still being popstars.
“I suppose [the birth] made me wonder if I’m still there, wondering if I just don’t want to go off and be a dad. I think that the album was well received, it just didn’t sell that well. I think it’s because all the madness has died down, I’m not flavour of the month anymore. I’m not up there with Kylie and Robbie. I’m happy that’s happened.’
