Fatboy Slim (right) engaged the talents of top director Spike Jonze to shoot the video for their new UK hit single ‘Rockafeller Skank’ (which has a UK mid-week chart placing of 11). However, the video will never be shown in its entirety on UK television.
Jonze, who has helmed promos for the likes of The Chemical Brothers, Beastie Boys and Daft Punk, was asked to make the official Slim promo video for ‘Rockafeller Skank’, but couldn’t spare the required time due to commitments to his imminent debut feature film.
Compromising, he videotaped himself dancing “like a lunatic” along Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles with ‘Rockafella Skank’ blasting out of a beatbox and sent it as a gift to Norman Cook (aka FatBoy Slim), of whom he is a big fan.
Under UK TV broadcast law, however, clearance must be obtained from every single person who inadvertently walked or drove into shot, a task that is a virtual impossibility.
Cook told NME: “It is one of the funniest videos I have ever seen. I love Spike’s work and I’m gutted we couldn’t use it as the official video in the UK.”
The video which will officially accompany the track’s release was subsequently shot by Doug Aitken, who previously worked on the video for FatBoy Slim’s ‘Goin’ Out Of My Head’.
