Macy Gray is the “platinum-selling vocalist” that Fatboy Slim is currently recording with in Los Angeles, can confirm.

As exclusively revealed by us on Monday (April 17), Slim has been working with a “platinum-selling vocalist” in LA over the past few days – but it’s only now that his spokesperson has decided to idenitfy the singer as the ‘I Try’ star.

Gray is thought to have been approached with the idea by representatives of Cook’s label Skint who were in the audience for her surprise performance with rap act Black Eyed Peas at the London LA2 on April 8.

Fatboy’s spokesperson told “There’s not really much to say yet as it’s early days. He’s in the studio in LA and she may be doing some vocals. We shall see what happens.”

He added that Gray revealed last year that she was a big fan of Norman Cook along with Skint labelmates Lo-Fidelity Allstars.

It’s understood Gray will provide vocals on at least one of the 15 songs Cook has written for his new album, which is expected by the end of the year.

Cook had previously hinted in an interview with US website, that he planned to work with live vocalists, at the suggestion of his friends the Chemical Brothers. He said: “Tom (Rowlands) and Ed (Simmons) said, ‘Instead of nicking bits off a capellas, why don’t you actually work with a vocalist?’, and I’m like, ‘Oh I’d be too nervous and they wouldn’t wanna do it’. There’s a few people I’ve phoned and the reactions have been quite good.”

Cook is also planning to collaborate with other musicians in the forthcoming recording sessions for the follow-up to 1998’s ‘You’ve Come A Long Way, Baby’, although he is not planning to work exclusively with vocalists.

Fatboy has also confirmed for a hometown gig this year at the Brighton Essential Festival on July 15.
