10,000 more tickets could be made available…

THE CARLING WEEKEND: READING FESTIVAL is aiming to increase its capacity by 10,000.

Organisers of the event which has just sold out of weekend tickets, are looking to add to the current 55,000 capacity by selling package tickets that would require holders to use rail or coach travel only.

” We have the ability to accommodate an additional 10,000 people to raise the capacity from 55,000 to 65,000,” Melvin Been, Managing Director of organisers Mean Fiddler, told BBC News. “We also have the ability to sell the additional 10,000 tickets on a combined package of either rail and ticket use or National Express and ticket use. The impact on the local community, such as traffic, will be negligible because the only method of buying the ticket is through purchase of a combined package.”

However some local residents have objected saying 55,000 is the maximum capacity the surrounding area can handle.

“From our viewpoint the site has been full for the last several years with 55,000,” said Robin Bentham, from the Warren And District Residents Association. “An additional 10,000 seems to be going beyond the limits the area can handle.”

The plans will be considered by licensing authorities early this summer.
