And the band narrowly escape an onstage fire...

SNOW PATROL continued their worldwide assault today (August 6) with an uplifting opening to Spain’s BENICASSIM festival.

In a summer of festival triumphs, the good vibes of Valencia proved a hit with singer Gary Lightbody. Despite narrowly avoiding catastrophe when a stage curtain briefly caught fire, the singer ended the show in typically jubilant mood. But it wasn’t just down to a great performance.

He told NME.COM: “It was the best show ever. Some people even jumped up and down! Everybody here is beautiful. Next door to the backstage area – as well as having a swimming pool, free beer, loads of beautiful people that don’t actually look like liggers, they actually look like they do something for a living, and next door to the backstage area you’ve got a catwalk for proper models. They have a fashion show as well, so if it wasn’t perfect enough they’ve got girls coming in straight off the catwalk into the bar, looking like they’d smash your head into tiny little pieces, but it’d be the best ten minutes of your life.”

The triumphant set ranged from the band’s first ever single ‘Starfighter

Pilot’ to recent smash hit ‘Run’.

Snow Patrol were among the first bands on site last night, arriving early to watch friends Ash play the opening party. They leave tomorrow, leaving Gary the chance to achieve a lifetime’s ambition. “I’m gonna watch Kraftwerk, I’ve never seen them before, I can’t wait. It’s just one of those things you have to tick off the list.”
