Foals ‘tricked’ into attending Mercury Prize nominations ceremony

Oxford band reveal they had no idea they were up for the award

FoalsYannis Philippakis has said the band had no idea they were up for the 2010 Barclaycard Mercury Prize, which was announced in London today (July 20).

Speaking after the nominations were made public, Philippakis said the band were tricked into attending the ceremony at the capital’s Hospital Club, and that they initially thought it was for a press interview instead.

“We’re really shocked,” Philippakis told NME. “We didn’t know about it until five minutes before the announcement. We were tricked by the people who work for us into thinking we were here for some other reason.”

Philippakis added: “We were in Spain and we had two days off, but they told us to fly back to do some press. We were kind of angry, so now it’s made the trip worthwhile.”

Speaking about what he would do if the band won the £20,000 cash award, Philippakis joked: “I’d get a nose job and I’d upgrade my girlfriend.”

The winner of the 2010 Barclaycard Mercury Prize will be announced at a ceremony in London on September 7.
