Foals debut new song ‘Give It All’ during intimate London album launch gig

Band performed at Village Underground prior to release of new album on Friday

Foals played new song ‘Give It All’ live for the first time as they celebrated the upcoming release of their new album in London last night.

Mobile phones and photography were banned inside Shoreditch’s Village Underground with the band keen to perform new material ahead of the release of fourth album ‘What Went Down’ this Friday (August 28).

Drummer Jack Bevan arrived onto the stage first and began the drum beat to ‘Snake Oil’, taken from ‘What Went Down’. He was then joined by his band mates with three members wearing matching white T-shirts. “We’re going to play something old now,” frontman Yannis Philippakis said at the end of the night’s first new track before launching into ‘Olympic Airways’ and ‘My Number’.

“It’s been a long time since we played a gig indoors and we’re very happy to be here” Philippakis added. New single ‘Mountain At My Gates’ was greeted by the 1,000 fans as if it were a staple of the bands set with circle pits forming. “You guys are fucking awesome” Philippakis said after the crowd’s roar died down.

There were four new songs in the 13 song set. ‘Give It All’, a sombre ballad which lies at the heart of ‘What Went Down’, featured next with security guards wandering through the crowd and shaking their heads authoritatively at anyone trying to film the performance or capture a photograph. The sparse and melancholic new song fitted in alongside the similarly sedate ‘Spanish Sahara’, for which the band made everyone in the venue crouch down on the ground as they played.

Picking up the pace towards the end of the hour plus set, Philippakis returned for the encore in high spirits. Dousing himself and the front rows in water, he climbed on top of an eight foot tall speaker stack during ‘Inhaler’ before diving into the audience and embracing fans when the band played album title track ‘What Went Down’. The set ended in traditional Foals style with Philippakis walking through the crowd as the band brought ‘Two Steps Twice’ to its furious climax.
