Foals’ Yannis Philippakis hits out against Spotify

The frontman says he would rather people stole vinyl than streamed music on the service

Foals frontman Yannis Philippakis has hit out against Spotify.

The singer says he would rather people stole vinyl than use the music streaming service.

“I’d rather somebody stole the record on vinyl than bought it or streamed it on Spotify,” he told Channel 4 News. “Because I think you should listen to music on vinyl, and I think basically anything’s better than that (Spotify).”

He then went on to criticise the “insulting pittance” that artists are paid on the service. “It’s like going to a restaurant when the chef and all the waiting staff have worked their asses off, and you leave coppers as a tip, and you don’t even pay the bill. That’s basically what Spotify’s like, I think,” he said.

Philippakis comments come after Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke’s much-publicised criticism of the service.

Yorke labelled the music streaming service “the last desperate fart of a dying corpse” after he and producer Nigel Godrich removed the Atoms For Peace album they made together from the service while Yorke’s solo album ‘The Eraser’ was also removed. Godrich went on to explain his position criticising the low royalty rates paid to artists – who he said received “f*ck all” from the service.

Foals are nominated for this year’s Mercury music prize for their album ‘Holy Fire’. Other nominees include Arctic Monkeys, Disclosure and David Bowie.
