Frank Turner has branded protesters at Margaret Thatcher’s funeral earlier this week (April 17) as “fucking immature”.
Speaking to Gigwise about the former Prime Minister’s controversial state funeral, he said: “I’m not a fan of her of her politics but I was pretty repelled by the reaction of some people on the left. It’s a fucking funeral, you know what I mean? Get over yourself.”
Referencing his song ‘Thatcher Fucked The Kids’, meanwhile, he went on to add: “Because of the song that I wrote, I had people suggesting that I was going to kind of be involved in protesting, but do you know what? The Westboro Baptist Church are the kind of people who protest funerals and I’m not interested in being part of that kind of bullshit, do you know what I mean?” He then concluded: “Just really gross, actually. Really fucking immature.”
In this week’s NME, Turner – who is set to release his fifth studio album ‘Tape Deck Heart’ next week (April 22) – also gave his opinion of current Prime Minister David Cameron. “David Cameron is a twat,” he said. “He carries himself with the attitude that he’s Prime Minister because he thinks he should be, which is a deeply unpleasant trait. I wouldn’t vote for that c**t. But I’m amused when people spout that ‘Nick Clegg stabbed me in the back’ stuff, because the Lib Dems have always been a deeply unprincipled mish-mash of unrealistic bullshit. They’re all politicians at the end of the day – so fuck ’em all.”
The latest issue of NME sees Frank Turner discussing the records that shaped his life and politics. Dave Grohl, Johnny Marr, Bat For Lashes and The Strokes’ Julian Casablancas and many more also reveal what records they were listening to at the most important times of their lives in this week’s Record Store Day special issue of NME, which is on newstands now and available digitally.
