Franz Ferdinand played a secret afternoon gig in Manchester earlier today (October 17).
The Scottish band played a short set at Mrs Boon’s Tea Party at The Ruby Lounge, hosted by Inspiral Carpets‘ Clint Boon and his wife Charlie.
The regular Saturday afternoon event was opened by local Reggae-Ska outfit Sonic Boom Six, with the audience eating homemade cake and drinking tea out of china cups as they watched their set.
After that and with little introduction, the 150 people who had crammed into the tiny venue were shocked as Clint Boon announced that the surprise guests were Franz Ferdinand.
Playing a range of songs from their entire back catalogue, Alex Kapranos and Nick McCarthy took to the stage to play their acoustic set.
Opening with ‘Do You Want To’ from the band’s 2005 album ‘You Could Have It So Much Better’ album, they followed up with ‘Walk Away’, ‘Take Me Out’, ‘No You Girls’ and ‘The Dark Of The Matinee’, before closing with ‘Ulysses’.
Talking to NME.COM after their set, Alex Kapranos and Nick McCarthy gave their reaction on the gig.
“I loved it, what a fantastic atmosphere,” Kapranos said. “It reminded me of a matinee gig we did a few years ago at Barrowlands in Glasgow where adults were only allowed in if they were accompanied by a child, it was a similar vibe.”
The pair also found time to mingle with fans, taking photographs and signing autographs – as well as trying some of the cakes on offer.
“I like any kind of cake, as long as it ain’t Battenberg,” Kapranos revealed before he and McCarthy left to get ready for their sold-out show at Manchester Apollo.
