Fun to set up marriage equality group?

Indie-pop group talk about creating a non-profit, same-sex marriage organisation

Fun have revealed that they plan to set up a not-for-profit, same-sex marriage group and help out the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community.

The ‘We Are Young’ trio want to cash in on their new found fame by hoping to establish the marriage equality organisation. While the three members of the group are straight, they feel they are in a position where people will listen to what they have to say on the matter.

Speaking to the Washington Post, guitarist Jack Antonoff explained why he believes marriage equality to be the defining issue of our time.

He said:

We’re firm believers in the idea that if you’re not talking about it, you’re part of the problem. We realise we have an audience, and it would be a real shame to waste it.

This isn’t the first time Antonoff has spoken out about same-sex marriage, as he recently told Spinner that being straight made him a “powerful” advocate for gay rights.

He added: “Being part of a band of three straight men, we felt there was an inherent power in the fact that we aren’t gay, and yet we still care and we have a voice – there’s a responsibility there.

“There are moments in history where it’s vital [to have a voice] and anyone that is not standing up for the LGBT community is a huge part of what’s holding them back.”

Fun are playing at this year’s T In The Park, which is taking place July 6-8 in Balado Park, Kinross. To check the availability of T In The Park 2012 tickets and get all the latest listings, go to NME.COM/TICKETS now, or call 0871 230 1094.
