Funeral For A Friend, The Rapture, The Von Bondies and Franz Ferdinand take to the road at last...

This year’s NME AWARDS TOUR is finally underway amid hysterical crowd scenes.

Last night (January 25) saw the first night of the most exciting tour NME has ever put together at Newcastle Northumbria University. From lunchtime onwards, hundreds of hardcore fans were queuing around the venue, hoping to get the best spots at the front.

When the doors finally opened at 7pm, fans sprinted inside and began cheering and moshing in anticipation. Opening band Franz Ferdinand drew as big a crowd as headliners Funeral For A Friend.

Speaking after coming offstage, Franz Ferdinand singer Alex Kapranos said: “Hopefully this tour will play a part in our success, it’s got a history of doing that for other bands. The NME tour is much like a festival on the road. When you see it pulling into town it’s like a circus with all the freaks arriving and all the people there to gawp at them. This tour is one of the many things we’ve lived for. We’ve said a million times we’re against elitism in music. I hope all the fans give each band a fair show.”

Following Franz Ferdinand, Rapture, Von Bondies and Funeral For A Friend all played electrifying sets, and were starting to make friends backstage.

Funeral For A Friend bassist Gareth Davies added: “It feels shocking to be headlining this. Friends who have been on the tour before like Lostprophets said what good fun it was. It’s amazing to be headlining along with three other bands we really like. We like the NME bills because they’re so eclectic.

The tour continues throughout this month, dates as follows:
