Gary Glitter has been found guilty of historic child sex offences dating back to the ’70s and ’80s.
The 70-year-old singer was convicted of attempted rape, four counts of indecent assault and one of having sex with a girl under the age of 13 at London’s Southwark Crown Court earlier today (February 5).
Glitter, who denied all charges, was acquitted of three other counts. He will be held in custody until sentencing on February 27.
The court heard one victim was under the age of 10 when Glitter tried to rape her, the BBC reports. She said the singer had crept into her bed as she slept and that she only managed to escape by wrapping herself in sheets and blankets.
Glitter, whose real name is Paul Gadd, was convicted in 1999 of possession of child pornography and served four months in prison. After his release he relocated to Vietnam, where he was subsequently convicted of a string of child sexual abuse offences.
The singer rose to prominence in the ’70s with a string of Number One hits including ‘I’m The Leader Of The Gang (I Am)’, ‘I Love You Love Me Love’, and ‘Always Yours’. Between 1972 and 1995, the singer had more than 20 hit singles, which spent a total of 180 weeks in the UK Top 100.
