'Thank you for waking so early' the Former My Chemical Romance frontman told the crowd as he showcased material from his forthcoming debut solo album
Gerard Way opened Reading Festival this afternoon (August 22) with his debut solo festival performance on the NME/BBC Radio 1 Stage.
The former My Chemical Romance frontman greeted early revellers as he showcased eight tracks from his forthcoming debut album ‘Hesitant Alien’. The set came two days after he played his first ever solo show at Portsmouth’s Wedgewood Rooms earlier this week.
Way arrived onstage wearing the same blue suit seen on his album cover, kicking off the Britpop-indebted set with ‘Bureau’, followed by ‘Action Cat’ and ‘Zero Zero’.
Greeting fans for the first time since his former band headlined the Reading and Leeds Festivals in 2011, Way said: “It is amazing to be back here. There are so many of you here. I fucking love you.”
He constantly thanked the crowd throughout his short performance as he went on to perform ‘Millions’, ‘Juarez’ and ‘Drugstore Perfume’.
During the latter, he declared: “Thank you for waking so early because you guys need your rest, so thanks for rushing over. I know a lot of these songs you’ve never heard before so I’m extra appreciative of you being here.”
Finishing up with his cover of The Jesus And Mary Chain’s ‘Snakedriver’, he told the crowd he loved them again as he left the stage.
