In memory of the star, who passed away in his sleep last week aged 74

BBC6 Music DJ and all round selector Gilles Peterson has released a special two-hour mix in memory of Earth Wind & Fire’s Maurice White.

The forward thinking champion of music has crafted a special, two hour long mix that delves into the history of Earth, Wind & Fire, one of the 20th century’s most successful bands. You can listen to his mix in the Soundcloud player below.

“So here’s my tribute to the mighty mighty one, Mr Maurice White, who sadly passed away on February 4 of this year” said Peterson on his Soundcloud page. “He left us an incredible treasure trove of music that has shaped the way I live my life!”

“I avoided the really obvious hits that you can hear everywhere and went for my personal faves, and a solid dose of the music that went on to shape the unique sound of Earth Wind and Fire from his early years working with two great mentors to him, Ramsey Lewis and Charles Stepney.”

“I got so much pleasure recording this – I hope you enjoy as much as I did!”

White suffered from Parkinson’s Disease in the early ’90s, causing him to stop touring with the band around 1994. Earth, Wind & Fire were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000.

The band were one of the most prominent acts of the ’70s and ’80s, their sounds spanning multiple genres, including R&B, soul, funk, jazz, disco, pop, rock, Latin and more. They are hailed as one of the most successful bands of the 20th Century.

The band are to be honoured with a ‘lifetime achievement award’ at the Grammy Awards on February 15.
