METALHEADZ, the seminal drum’n’bass club first started by GOLDIE in the mid-90s, reopened at the LIMELIGHT CLUB in LONDON last night (Sunday 20).
The night, which follows the recent relaunch of the label with a string of 12-inch singles and a compilation album, ‘Platinum Breakz 3’, featured DJs Marly Marl, Bailey, Storm, Randall and Goldie playing to a capacity crowd.
DJs Bailey and Storm played back to back, followed by Randall manning the decks with a champagne-swilling Goldie for a final set.
Initially one of Goldie‘s early pseudonyms (under which guise he released 1992’s epoch-making ‘Terminator’), Metalheadz evolved into possibly the most influential jungle imprint of the mid-90s and finally – at the Blue Note in Hoxton Square – as arguably one of the most well-respected drum’n’bass nights ever.
A relocation to Camden’s Dingwalls, though, which continued until just before Christmas 2000, was considered not to have been as successful.
However, the reaction to the newly relaunched night was positive. “It’s different and new, but there was a really, really wicked vibe,” commented a spokesperson for Metalheadz.
Metalheadz will take place at The Limelight every Sunday evening.
