Special ‘Monkey Train’ for Damon Albarn’s Manchester opera

Jamie Hewlett and Virgin Trains collaborate for festival

Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett‘s world premiere of their unique new opera ‘Monkey: Journey To The West’ is set to arrive in style with the announcement of its collaboration with Virgin Trains.

Virgin Trains launched their specially designed Monkey Train for the event this week (May 29).

Monkey‘s designer Jamie Hewlett collaborated with graffiti artist Chu on a one off design for Virgin.

The nine carriage, 217 metre Pendolino train has been wrapped with nine set designs, over the nine carriages, illustrated with over 90 characters from the production.

The specially commissioned train was unveiled in advance of the Manchester International Festival, opening on June 28.

The opera will premiere at the festival on the same date.

Music excerpts taken from the production can be heard on the Monkey: Journey To The West MySpace page, which can be accessed by clicking on Myspace.com/monkeyjourneytothewest.
