The animated popsters waste thousands on an acceptance speech for an award they don't even win...

DAMON ALBARN’S GORILLAZ blew £20,000 on the recent

MTV MUSIC VIDEO AWARDS – because they’d mistakenly been told

they would win, NME can reveal.

The Blur

singer, his Gorillaz

co-creator Jamie Hewlett and producer Dan The

Automator attended the MTV Music Video Awards in

New York on September 6 where the animated

video for hit single ‘Clint Eastwood’ was up for three

VMAs and was favourite for the MTV2 award voted

for by viewers.

Damon and Gorillaz

were so confident they splashed out £20,000 on an animated acceptance

speech. It featured the characters in the band and was to be screened when they

were announced as winners.

On the night, though, Gorillaz

won nothing and Albarn and Hewlett were left fuming.

Mudvayne instead won the MTV2 award for their

‘Dig’ single.

Ironically, when Gorillaz

refused their nomination for the Mercury Music Prize, they

missed out on a potential £20,000 in prize money – which could have wiped

out the expense of the MTV night.
