Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci co-founder and guitarist John Lawrence has quit the band to “pursue his own musical direction”.
A spokesman told NME he left last week before the band signed a new deal with Beggars Banquet, but after he had finished recording the band’s new album.
The LP, which is as yet untitled, will be released in the autumn with a single in September.
The spokesman said Lawrence had been considering the move for some time, but the prospect of signing another contract as a member of the band had prompted his decision.
“The band have been together since 1991, when they were all doing their GSCEs, and John just wants to do his own thing now,” he said. “The band are surprised and disappointed, but it’s all very amicable, even if that does sound like a clichi.”
He added that the band did not want to say anything further at this stage and that the remaining four members had still not decided whether to replace him. Gorky‘s are not planning any live dates until September, so they had plenty of time to make up their minds, the spokesman said.
