Tre Cool's ex-wife says he had been sober for a year prior to the Las Vegas incident
Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong had reportedly been ‘drinking a lot’ the night of his recent onstage breakdown in Las Vegas.
The singer checked himself into a clinic for substance abuse treatment on Sunday (September 23) two days after a meltdown during the band’s performance at iHeartRadio Music Festival.
Claudia Suarez Wright, the ex-wife of Green Day drummer Tre Cool, told Celebuzz that Armstrong had been sober for a year, but started drinking again on the day of the show.
She said: “When he was in Vegas he was drinking a lot. The night of the show he had been drinking. In Las Vegas there’s a lot of temptation to drink and it’s tough to be around when you’re fighting against it. They have a new album coming out and it’s a demanding lifestyle. It’s very difficult.”
Suarez Wright went on to say that Armstrong is currently in rehab, with his family by his side. “He’s my son’s godfather so it’s very hard for kids to see this happen. And it must be very difficult for his wife and family,” she added.
The singer launched into a foul-mouthed tirade at the end of the band’s gig in Las Vegas on September 21. Believing that the band only had one minute of their slot remaining, Armstrong yelled: “Oh fuck this shit. I’m gonna play a fucking new song. Fuck this shit. Give me a fucking break. One minute left. You’re gonna give me one fucking minute?”
He went on to say: “Let me tell you something, I’ve been around since 19-fucking-88. And you’re gonna give me one fucking minute? You’ve gotta be fucking kidding me! You’re fucking kidding me. What the fuck! I’m not fucking Justin Bieber, you motherfuckers.”
Armstrong concluded his outburst by smashing his guitar on the stage and aiming a parting shot at the audience, stating: “One minute. God fucking love you all. We’ll be back.”
Green Day released their new album ‘iUno!’, on Monday (September 24). The rest of the band’s new album trilogy, ‘¡Uno!, ¡Dos!, ¡Tré!’, will be released in two other stages – with the second LP, ‘¡Dos!’, coming out on November 12 and ‘¡Tré!’ on January 14, 2013.
Last month the band announced a huge UK stadium show for next summer. The trio will headline London’s 60,000 capacity Emirates Stadium on June 1, 2013. Tickets for the show will go on sale September 28.
