A hastily-deleted tweet from Billie Joe Armstrong initially fuelled speculation

Green Day are have confirmed that they will make a surprise appearance at Reading Festival this weekend, to play their seminal 1994 album ‘Dookie’ in full.

The pop punk veterans are in the UK as part of their whistlestop tour, and this week announced a show at London’s 02 Shepherd’s Bush Empire for tomorrow (August 23).

The band broke the news about Reading earlier this evening on Radio 1, after dropping hints on Twitter earlier on in the day, with Billie Joe Armstrong writing: “Hello England! What rhymes with shredding??!!” The tweet has since been deleted.

It will be the band’s first appearance at the festival since headlining in 2004. They will play at 12pm on Saturday (August 25) on the NME/ Radio 1 stage.

Green Day release the first installment of their three-album series ‘¡Uno!’, ‘¡Dos!’ and ‘¡Tré!’, on September 24, with the remaining two albums following at two-month intervals. Last week, they debuted another track from ‘¡Uno!’, ‘Kill The DJ’, and have promised more surprises as the sequence unfolds. Watch the NSFW video for the lead single ‘Oh Love’ below.
