Green Day play farewell gig for ‘American Idiot’ musical

Band perform hour-long show after final night of muriscal

Green Day played an hour-long gig after the final night of the American Idiot musical on Sunday (April 24).

Frontman Billie Joe Armstrong, who had returned to the cast for the final three weeks of the run after quitting in February, was joined by his band mates for a 10-song set at the St James Theatre on Broadway.

The cast danced behind them while drinking beer, reports

As well as playing favourites including ‘Welcome To Paradise’ and ‘Burnout’, the band included two covers in their set. They played ‘Walking Out On Love’ by The Nerves and the theme song from the TV, cartoon version of Spider-Man.

Armstrong told the crowd: “Ladies and gentlemen this isn’t a fucking party, this is a fucking celebration!” Gesturing to the stage set, he added: “I never thought I’d see my bedroom on a Broadway stage.”

The show ran for 421 performances and 27 previews at the St James Theatre. It previously played at the Berkeley Repertory Theater in California.

The show announced its closure after a sharp decline in ticket sales after Armstrong left the cast.
