Green Day’s ‘American Idiot’ ticket sales dive after Billie Joe Armstrong leaves

Ticket sale gross for musical drops by almost $1 million (£620,000)

Ticket sales for Green Day‘s American Idiot musical have dropped off drastically since Billie Joe Armstrong left the cast.

Armstrong left the show on February 27, with interest in the show has dipping since he was replaced by AFI frontman Davey Havok.

According to Billboard, in the week after Armstrong left the show ticket sales for that week fell from grossing around $1.3 million (£805,000) to $395,000 (£245,000).

The report added that those kind of box office figures in New York, where the musical is showing, usually lead to shows closing.

No spokesperson for the show, which is running at St James Theatre on Broadway, would comment on the figures. But it is likely that some kind of drop-off in ticket sales has been factored into planning for the show.

Armstrong‘s presence had accounted for a 50 per cent leap in ticket sales when he first joined the cast.
