Melvin Benn bigs up US band ahead of their performances this weekend (August 23-25)
Reading and Leeds promoter Melvin Benn has said that Green Day will “boss” their headline set at the festivals this weekend (August 23-25).
The US pop-punk band will headline Reading festival on Friday (August 23) and Leeds on the Saturday (24) and Benn promises classic performances. Speaking to NME in a new interview in this week’s issue, on newsstands from tomorrow (August 21) andavailable digitallyBenn also discussed Green Day’s secret set at Reading Festival in 2012, which saw them perform unannounced on the Radio 1 stage.
“When Green Day played their secret set last year,” Benn said, “we had been talking to them about headlining Reading and Leeds again anyway. We asked if they could do 40 minutes. They had a two-hour setlist, and asked if we were sure they couldn’t keep playing. There are a number of bands that are very closely associated with Reading and Leeds and Green Day are definitely one of them. When they play, they just boss it; they absolutely own the stage and engage with the fans – that’s something I will never tire of.”
Benn previously said that Biffy Clyro headlining Reading and Leeds this year is a statement of the event’s desire to give young British bands the chance to “come forward”.
“The most special moment for me will be when Biffy take the stage as headliners at Reading and Leeds. They are one of the bands that cut their teeth at Reading and Leeds. They sharpened themselves in front of those audiences. They are a band who are at a point where they wanted to headline for a little while. They’ve been knocking on the door. They’re a great British band.”
Other names on the Reading and Leeds line-up include Nine Inch Nails, who will return to perform at the festival for the first time since 2007, plus Foals, Frank Turner, Deftones, and System Of A Down. The NME/Radio One stage will be headlined by Skrillex, Alt-J and Phoenix. Other acts playing include A$AP Rocky, Major Lazer, Jake Bugg, Tame Impala, Azealia Banks, Disclosure, Peace, Palma Violets, Fidlar and HAIM.
