The Canadian electropop artist Grimes is to play a headline slot at a new comic convention.
Grimes, whose real name is Claire Boucher, has been announced as a surprise addition to the line-up at the Wizard World con in Philadelphia on 3 June. She’ll appear alongside a host of major Hollywood and TV stars, including Chris Evans, Tom Hiddleston, Chris Hemsworth and Michael J. Fox, as well as the likes of WWE superstar John Cena.
Wizard World is billing Grimes’ appearance as a first for comic cons, claiming her as the first major music star ever to play one.
Boucher is currently on tour in the US in support of her 2015 album ‘Art Angels’, and fans will be hoping that she takes the opportunity to debut some of the new material she recently told the print edition of Rolling Stone she’d been working on.
“I’m actually halfway done with another record,” she said. “I’m not committing to anything, but I have a bunch of B-sides I kind of want to finish.”
Though she later clarified the remarks in a post on her personal tumblr, saying that “no new material is imminent”, she did hint at a direction which “would be more chill vibes, downtempos, synth-y shit”.
Grimes will be supported by the up-and-comer Hana, while New York singer-songwriter Melanie Martinez will also play Wizarding World, which runs in many cities throughout the United States all year, though no details of date or location have yet to be announced.
The Philadelphia leg of the Wizard World convention will be held between 2 and 5 June 2016 at the city’s Pennsylvania Convention Center. Grimes is slated to play on Friday 3 June.
