Grimes auctions artwork to raise money for new environmental newspaper

Boucher says she wants to stop the Canadian government from 'acting like complete creeps'

Grimes is selling off original artwork to raise funds for National Observer, a forthcoming environmental publication from Canada’s Vancouver Observer.

The Canadian-born musician has listed the original painting that features on the sleeve of her single ‘Go’ on Ebay, as well as a print of the artwork for her recent collaboration with Bleachers. Bidding for the former is current at £760 ($1,125) and the latter £689 ($1,020).

Grimes said of her role in the fundraising: “The main reason I love the Observer is for their dedication to Canada’s environmental issues. How the Canadian gov has been silencing nonprofits with audits, and basically acting like complete creeps, taking money from oil companies, ignoring the communities who are noticing health issues related to tar sands or fracking, the massive environmental damage from oil spills — all that kinda stuff. The observer has broken a bunch of important stories and won awards for their journalism. If we don’t stay aware and actively shut down proposals like keystone XL there could be massive environmental/social consequences in and outside Canada.”

This follows the news of new Grimes song ‘REALiTi’, a demo dating back to 2013.

Meanwhile, Grimes recently said that she scrapped a whole album’s worth of new music because it was “depressing”.

“The album was scrapped cuz it was depressing and I didn’t want to tour it,” the musician, real name Claire Boucher, wrote online. “I may release it one day. I throw out music all the time, i have almost 1000 gigs of unreleased music on my hard drive. I just want the next album to be as good as possible. ‘Go’ was never on the album anyway, it is a collaboration with a close friend that was released for fans as a ‘Thank you’ for waiting since my album was being delayed. There are only about 4 people on earth who have heard my new music. People’s opinions do not factor into my process. That is all, and hopefully this helps… I’m really not that sad or insecure of a person.”

Last year Grimes confirmed that she has worked with US MC Lizzo on her new album, while hinting that the record could be a double album.
