Former Guns N' Roses bassist will release book on May 12
Original Guns N’ Roses bassist Duff McKagan will publish an advice book titled How To Be A Man (And Other Illusions) this May.
McKagan, who played with both Guns N’ Roses and the band Velvet Revolver, told Total Rock Radio that he landed the book deal after his work as a columnist on Seattle Weekly and that his self-help guide would be published on May 12 via De Capo Press. He previously released an autobiography, titled It’s So Easy (And Other Lies), in 2013.
Speaking about his new book, McKagan said: “I had a column for the Seattle Weekly for five years, and there was one column that was called ‘How To Be A Man’, and it was kind of tongue in cheek; it was really tongue in cheek. And I got a book deal from that column.”
He added: “It’s a how-to guide of things I’ve learned about life – being a dad, being a husband and being in a rock band. And it’s, like, a city guide in it, but a very tongue-in-cheek city guide; like, how I see cities. It’s got all kinds of stuff. And other stories. And hopefully it’s gonna be a funny book.”
You can read McKagan’s original ‘How To Be A Man’ column, published in January 2013, at Seattle Weekly now, with his tips including “lead by example”, “learn how to fight” and “don’t be a pussy”. In April last year, McKagan rejoined his old band Guns N’ Roses for a number of gigs in South America. He had previously played with the group at London’s O2 Arena in 2010, and his own band Loaded also opened shows for Axl Rose and co in 2011.
