Halsey and The Chainsmokers pay emotional tribute to Avicii at the Billboard Music Awards

"He meant so much to us and so many in the EDM community"

Halsey and The Chainsmokers were among the leading acts paying tribute to Avicii at the Billboard Music Awards last night.

The Las Vegas ceremony took place exactly a month since the pioneering DJ’s death, and honoured his memory by showing some of his greatest moments during the In Memoriam segment.

But the tributes were given a real emotional edge when The Chainsmokers were given a chance to honour the DJ and recall their touching experiences of working with him.


“His passing was a great loss for the music world and for us. He was an artist who inspired so many in so many ways and simply put he meant so much to us and so many in the EDM community”, The Chainsmokers’ Andrew Taggart said as he handed out the award for Top Hot 100 Song.


Halsey added: “Everyone who worked with him would agree he was such a joy and it makes this tragedy all the more painful. And it’s a reminder to all of us to be there and to support and love all of our friends and family members who may be struggling with mental health issues.”

Taggart paid further tribute later in the evening, dedicating their award for top dance/electronic artist to the ‘Levels’ star.

“We want to dedicatedthis award to Avicii”, Taggart said during The Chainsmokers’ acceptance speech.

“I know everyone that was nominated for this award was massively influenced by him. He made us believe that this was a realistic career, something we could do with our lives, inspired all of us, influenced our music, influenced pop music, music in general, and he will be missed. I hope you’re somewhere. I hope you’ve found peace, and we love you.”
