Shaun Ryder details plans for new Happy Mondays track and solo album

First new music from original Happy Mondays line-up since 1992 forthcoming

Happy Mondays man Shaun Ryder has discussed new music forthcoming in an interview with NME.

It was recently revealed that Ryder and his band will appear in reality TV show ‘Singing In The Rainforest’, a programme which sees artists recording new music in remote locations. Now, speaking about the project in this week’s issue of NME, available digitally and on newsstands now, the Manchester musician said: “It was life-changing, mate.”

Ryder continued: “The more I thought about the offer, the more I thought, ‘Why don’t we bring the rest of the Happy Mondays along, too?’’ So all of us went to Panama to live and hunt with this indigenous tribe of musicians. We were hunting all kinds of birds, animals, giant rats… But the closest shave I had was with sunburn.”

Speaking specifically of the new Happy Mondays track, Ryder added: “They had all sorts of drummers and percussionists, and when the show comes out, you’ll be able to download the track that we made with them. It’s the first piece of music the original Happy Mondays line-up have written since 1992.”

Shaun Ryder recently released two new solo tracks under his SWR moniker, titled ‘Close The Dam’ and ‘Electric Scales’. In the same interview, he also revealed that a full solo record will be released in early 2016.

“I’ve done the record with Sonny Levine, who also worked on [Happy Mondays’ 2007 album] ‘Unkle Dysfunctional’, and while I was getting there on that record, this is the first one I’ve done totally [sober],” he said. “We did half of the album in LA and the other half in Manchester, and it’s been a blast. Years ago, when I was pumped full of drugs, I thought I was doing myself a favour and making things easier. But when you’ve got a clear head, there’s nothing fucking easier than that. I wish I’d learned that 20 fucking years ago and saved myself a lot of time!”

Earlier this year, the Happy Mondays confirmed an 18-date tour for November and December to celebrate the 25-year anniversary of their classic album ‘Pills ‘N’ Thrills And Bellyaches’. Of the upcoming dates, Shaun Ryder said at the time: “Great to be doing 25 years of ‘Pills ‘N’ Thrills…’. Here’s to another 25 years. I’m going to remember it this time.”
