“He bought us champagne”: Biffy Clyro speak out after Nick Knowles said they landed him a record deal

"We had a drink and we left and there might have been a guitar there."

Biffy Clyro have spoken out after TV star Nick Knowles claimed that the Scottish trio were responsible for him landing an unlikely record deal.

The DIY SOS host was discussing his sideline as a musician with the other contestants on I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here on Tuesday when he claimed a chance jamming session with the Scottish trio landed him the deal that saw him releasing a debut album in 2017.

But while Knowles did meet the band on a Soho rooftop, it seems that it wasn’t quite the meeting of musical minds that the TV host has depicted.

Speaking on Greg James’ Radio 1 Breakfast show, drummer James Johnston said: “He’s been a bit fast and loose with the truth there.

“It was more like eight years ago, and it was after an awards ceremony. We came back to this hotel in Soho and we’d been informed that Nick Knowles had bought us a bottle of champagne to celebrate on the roof! He was lovely, we had a drink and we left and there might have been a guitar there.”

However, Johnston denies that a full jam session never actually happened.

“He was a nice guy! I’m not gonna say anything bad about him, Mr Nick Knowles, he was lovely,” he explained.

“But I don’t think it’s quite the Kum Ba Yah situation that everyone might have in their heads. I’m really sorry to shatter the illusion that we had a proper heavy jam with Nick Knowles, because that did not happen I’m afraid.

“It’s a half truth. We were in the same rooftop bar at the same time, and he was very nice.”

But could their unlikely friendship lead to Knowles supporting the Scottish rockers in the future?

“It’d be quite handy if he could help us put the stage and take it down with his amazing carpentry skills. We’ll keep his hat in the ring”, Johnston joked.

Meanwhile, the band recently spoke to NME about future projects – revealing that they are at work on two albums and a film.

“We’ve been working on a lot of new music,” said Neil. “We’re working on two records concurrently at the moment.

“We’re doing one record for a movie which will be filmed once we’ve finished it. It’s this really cool kind of collaboration with this Welsh director called Jamie Adams. He’s a fantastic director. He makes some really hilarious movies, but this one will not be funny!”
