And this time the public takes on the role of Nasty Nigel...

The creators of the ‘POPSTARS’ television series which spawned HEAR’SAY are to embark on a follow-up series entitled ‘POP IDOL’.

‘Pop Idol’ will be an ITV television series roughly based on ‘Popstars’, whereby a panel of judges will pick wannabe stars from auditions across the country.

It is anticipated that once a shortlist of candidates is drawn up, the public will then vote on the individual who will win a recording contract with RCA records and a management deal with Simon Fuller – who previously worked with the Spice Girls and now manages S Club 7.

ITV controller of entertainment Claudia Rozencrantz said: “After the phenomenal success of ‘Popstars’, it will be wonderful to give our viewers the chance to decide who should be next for pop stardom.”

A spokesperson for ITV was unavailable for comment this morning (March 23).
