HMV has outlined plans to relaunch its digital music service, including a new app which will allow users to purchase albums using their smart phone.
The retailer was placed into administration earlier this year and bought by Hilco. The company has hired former Vodafone executive James Coughlan as head of HMV Digital in the UK in a bid to help improve the company’s online presence.
As part of the relaunch, the retailer is developing new Android and iOS apps which will allow users to download songs instantly using image and sound recognition software. Apple users who use the app will find their downloaded tracks automatically stored in iTunes. Films and games will be added to the HMV app service next year.
The HMV website will also be relaunched next week.
Speaking to BBC Newsbeat, James Coughlan says: “I think it could be a blessing in disguise that HMV’s been out of the game for this long. There are so many services in the marketplace and there’s certainly been lots of trial and error up until now that we can take key learnings from. It ensures we bring a service to market that will hit home with our consumers.”
Hilco chief executive and HMV chairman Paul McGowan recently explained how he plans to improve the flagging retailer following the administrator’s £50m takeover earlier this year.
